First Steps for Students & Members of the RWTH

Students and members of RWTH Aachen University can use computing resources on the HPC system with a basic computing time quota. Computing resources can also be applied for beyond the base computing time quota, for example for courses or student research projects and theses. The steps required for this are listed below.

Please Note

If you are a member of Research Center Jülich (FZJ), please refer to the info box at the bottom of the page.

1. HPC Account

The basic requirement for using our HPC system is an account in the Identity Management of the RWTH Aachen. With this, registration in the RWTH RegApp is then necessary in order to obtain an HPC account. Employees, students or RWTH partners usually already have an account in the Identity Management. If not, you can find out how the coupon procedure works and how to get an account on IT Center Help.

A detailed explanation of how to create an HPC account can be found on our documentation portal IT Center Help.

2. Use & Request of Computing Time

For students and members of RWTH Aachen University, a basic computing time quota is set, which can be used without a special application for computing time. If this quota is not sufficient for your project, you have the option of applying for a computing time project. Computing time projects can be submitted for various purposes, for example for courses, theses or research projects. However, a prerequisite for the application is that the relevant supervisor, lecturer or head of research (PI) submits the application.
An overview of all possible computing time projects with the corresponding available computing time quotas can be found in our documentation portal IT Center Help.

Special Feature for Members of Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ)

Members of Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) can receive a coupon for a identity management account via the FZJ identity provider. This account must then be used to register in the RWTH RegApp in order to obtain an HPC account. Information on the accounts and the coupon procedure can be found on IT Center Help.
