Mission

The mission of HPC at RWTH Aachen University is to create an ecosystem that has both the breadth and depth to support the development of scalable algorithms and software that is of central importance for technical developments in economy and society and to provide first-class infrastructure for the execution of the resulting HPC applications and the processing of corresponding data. This is significantly supported by key projects such as JARA and NHR and resulted in the establishment of NHR4CES as a national high performance computing center for computational engineering science at RWTH.

High Performance Computing at RWTH Aachen University is more than just powerful machines; it's a collaborative ecosystem driven by dedicated individuals. In the following, we introduce the key people involved who play pivotal roles in shaping our HPC activities, from research and infrastructure to education and outreach. They are committed to providing researchers with the resources and support they need to tackle the most challenging computational problems facing our world today.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Matthias Müller

Prof. Dr. Matthias Müller is not only the director of the IT Center and NHR4CES@RWTH, but also the head of the Chair for High Performance Computing at RWTH Aachen. In this dual role, he is largely responsible for the strategic development of high-performance computing (HPC) at the university. In close cooperation with the IT Center team, in particular with Christian Terboven, who is responsible for sub-project management and HPC coordination, he is instrumental in the planning and implementation of HPC projects and the expansion of the infrastructure. Prof. Müller supervises and monitors the development of HPC strategies and plays a central role in the strategic orientation and implementation of future-oriented research projects.

Dr. rer. nat. Christian Terboven

Christian Terboven is responsible for the sub-project management in NHR4CES@RWTH and HPC coordination at the IT Center. In direct consultation with the director Matthias Müller, he promotes the development and advancement of the strategy and implementation planning in HPC, in particular for research projects and infrastructure. He coordinates the HPC procurements and is responsible for their implementation.

Sascha Bücken

Sascha Bücken leads the "Server, Storage, HPC" group at the IT Center and in this role is responsible, among other things, for the smooth and reliable operation of the high-performance computer for local/countrywide (Tier-3) and national (Tier-2) provision at RWTH (NHR4CES@RWTH). To this end, Sascha is in continuous and close contact with the HPC coordinator Christian Terboven. He supports him in the preparation and implementation of HPC procurements.

Dipl.-Ök. Michaela Bleuel

Michaela Bleuel heads the HPC office of the IT Center and in this function reports directly to the director of the IT Center. In this role, Michaela is responsible for the overall coordination of HPC collaborative projects such as NHR4CES and HPC.NRW. This includes all aspects of science management such as the strategic development of these projects, financial management, public relations and reporting to the donors. In addition, she coordinates the Modeling and Simulation Sciences profile area at RWTH and the JARA Center for Simulation and Data Science (JARA CSD).

Dr. rer. nat. Tim Cramer

Tim Cramer is head of HPC resource allocation at the IT Center. In this role, he is responsible for planning and coordinating the allocation of high-performance computing (HPC) resources for both local/statewide supply (Tier-3) and within the framework of national high-performance computing (Tier-2) at RWTH (NHR4CES@RWTH). The efficient use of computing capacities and support for researchers in the implementation of their projects are always at the forefront. In addition, he heads the JARDS project for the NHR association and thus coordinates the requirements of all nine NHR centers for the central allocation portal.
